Matching autumn sets: how to wear them together and apart

A complete look that works first time: that is the promise of matching sets. This October the Spanish fashion press (Woman, La Razón, Elle, Yo Dona) is backing them again, and NEW IN already has several ready to wear.

This guide does two things: shows how to wear each set as a whole, with no overthinking, and how to split the pieces so every set works twice as hard in your wardrobe.

Why matching sets work

Because they solve the morning: two pieces that already get along, with considered proportions and colours that talk to each other. And, chosen well, they are not a uniform — each piece lives happily alone with any basic.

Four sets in NEW IN

Munich twinset (blue or red)

A short-sleeved crew-neck knit top plus a buttoned cardigan with matching contrast edging, in soft viscose. The blue plays with red and black trims; the red with turquoise and black.

  • Together: with straight black trousers or dark denim and ankle boots. An effortless office or Sunday-lunch look.
  • Apart: the top on its own, tucked into a midi skirt; the cardigan open over a white shirt or a plain tee.

Venecia top and skirt (red)

A fitted stretch top with a back zip and a flared midi skirt with a defined waist and side pockets, in a strong red.

  • Together: head-to-toe red with black shoes and a single accessory. Nothing more: the colour is the look.
  • Apart: the top with straight black trousers; the skirt with a white shirt or a fine roll-neck jumper.

Belgrado top and Venecia Tapiz skirt

A fitted sleeveless top in tapestry fabric and a flared midi skirt with a floral, botanical print on an aqua-green background. Two pieces with plenty of character that understand each other.

  • Together: evening or event looks, with a light jacket on top if it turns cool.
  • Apart: the top with straight black trousers or jeans; the skirt with a plain shirt and a knit jacket.

Sintra shirt and San Marino check trousers

A cotton check shirt and wide-leg, high-waisted palazzo trousers, also cotton, in mustard, blue and ochre tones (a blue version is available too).

  • Together: check on check, tone on tone, with flats or loafers.
  • Apart: the shirt with straight jeans; the trousers with a plain jumper or a white tee.

How to wear the full set

  • One shoe and bag colour: let the set be the star.
  • A single statement accessory (earrings, scarf or belt), not three.
  • A neutral layer on top — jacket or short coat — so the look lasts from morning to night.

How to split the pieces and keep the style

Golden rule: one hero piece and one plain piece. If the skirt is printed, add a basic on top; if the trousers are checked, pair them with a tee or jumper in a colour that already appears in the pattern. That way each garment lives in two or three different looks.

Where to find your set

Start with NEW IN and browse by category: knitwear and jackets for the twinset, skirts and skirts and trousers for the bottoms, and shirts for tops and shirts. These are limited editions: if you spot your combination, don't leave it for later.

Pick a set, try it whole, then split the pieces: at Smile the looks are made to be repeated in a thousand ways.
